about

"Unearthed Sounds from 1974" is a collection of 22 live recordings revived from cassette tapes found in Kit Ebersbach's archives.

~

Every musician in Hawaii felt the ripples left by Seawind in the 1970s.

Seawind — Ox, as they were known then — comprised the best players living in the islands at the time, led by Bob Wilson and fronted by one of the greatest singers to ever come from Hawaii, Pauline Wilson. (Read our interview with Pauline alohagotsoul.com/2014/04/02/interview-pauline-wilson-traces-the-history-of-seawind/).

By 1974, Ox had left to Los Angeles for greater gigs (they signed to CTI and later A&M), but back in Honolulu others continued on in similar fashion, driven by the group's game-changing jazz-funk-fusion.

Us, a band led by Kit Ebersbach and Ron Tinsley, carried this torch in their own way. (The name "Us" pays tribute to the two-lettered "Ox").

While tunes like "Compared To What" and "Slippin' Into Darkness" traveled the circuit — Seattle's Burgundy Express recorded both for an LP that followed their Waikiki residency — Tinsley and guest female vocal trio, TNT, incorporated fresh tunes that might not have reached the islands otherwise: "I Can't Stand The Rain" by Ann Peebles had just hit the market before the band recorded their version.

Us jammed In Waikiki at the Chart House and on Maui for residencies at Nick's Fish Market and the Silversword Inn. Jerry Eubank, reeds, performed with the group prior to these recordings. Larry Hall and Gary Wilson joined the group on a recommendation from Bob Wilson of Seawind.

What remains are these recordings, a few photos of Larry Hall with Kit and his family, and a handful of stories — like how Seawind's Bob Wilson linked Kit with his brother, Gary Wilson, and Larry Hall when Us needed horn players. Or when Stevie Wonder sat in for on a song while on vacation in Maui.

Those were the days.
